New Puppy News!

People always say that dogs are man’s best friend, and Dan has been pestering me for a puppy since we moved into our home a year ago. I’ve never had a dog before, so was hesitant to let go of some of the freedom associated with not owning a pet, ie jetting off on holiday whenever I wanted, leaving my leftover dinner on the floor instead of taking it into the kitchen, or you know, not being followed all day, every day.

Alas, I relented, and we are waiting on our new puppy. Like we did with our fish tank in the summer, we went for a starter pet rather than jumping into a Labrador or Newfoundland. Meet our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel!

Despite the loss of freedom, which I imagine I will never get back (unless perhaps I live to 80) the benefits of owning a dog far outweigh the negatives.

Cons:

  • Responsibility for another living being
  • Training another living being to not be annoying
  • No more 2 week holidays
  • Picking up poop
  • Barking
  • Insurance and vet bills

Pros:

  • More exercise
  • Something that loves you unconditionally
  • Something that you love unconditionally, which I realised when I saw him
  • Company when you are alone
  • More opportunities to hang out with my dog owning friends
  • Less stress
  • A healthy heart
  • Preparation for a new human (not yet though)

Someone might also add protection in there, but I highly doubt a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is going to defend me against a burglar.

As soon as he was put into my hands, I completely fell in love. Just look at my face! He’s chunky and inquisitive, and smells like a baby. I did get peed on, and he did try to munch on my finger, but he’s my boy and I can’t wait to bring him home.

So that’s it, we have a soppy, fluffball Cavalier on the way and I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing! If any of you have any tips or advice on owning your first dog, please, leave me a comment!

      1. Ah well at least there are some places you know you can take her.I’ve been searching for some dog friendly hotels and I’ve had some luck but could be better. I guess he’ll have to be left with my dad.

  1. Oh my life, he’s adorable 😍😍 I’d love a dog but it just isn’t practical for me right now. I always say I’ll get on when I retire but that’s such a long way off 😭 Look forward to seeing more of the lil guy in your future posts – take him with you on your drives, I’m sure he’ll love a big walk and explore in the countryside!

    1. I am so excited to bring him home. I don’t know if there’s ever a right time – he’s going to be more commitment than a baby, really.
He’s definitely going to be a huge feature of future posts. Dan and I have been thinking about getting him his own Insta 😂

    1. Well, I’ll keep you updated with how my first puppy goes, and we might end up puppy pals! He’s totally going to end up sleeping in my bed. I can just sense it.

Also though, what’s so bad about a couple more years of travelling? Your dream puppy will be born just when you want them!
