Sneak peek into a travel blogger’s work space

I decided to do something a little different for today’s post. I am a nosy parker, and I love to snoop in on my fellow writer and blogger’s work space (and lives) when I get the chance, so I thought I’d give a little back.

Here is my pride and joy, or the place where I tend to dump everything I own: my office! Usually, this room is littered with paper, but for the purposes of this post, I had a little spring clean.

All the furniture in here is purchased from Ikea. Dan bought the set on the provision that I keep the room tidy – yeah, right. The desk and bookshelf are the perfect size for regular use. As you can see, I can store a printer and mirror on the desk and still have ample space to scour travel books, plan trips and write blog posts!

I love my bookshelf. I’m a literature graduate, so in 10 years of study and teaching, I’ve built a pretty decent collection of books. On one shelf I keep all my classics: Frankenstein, Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Ulysses. Just below, I keep my modern literature, including some of my absolute favourite books – Small Island, Lolita, A Thousand Splendid Suns. Then, the bottom shelves are used primarily for my big books, my anthologies and critical literature.

What I also keep close by is a small collection of travel books for inspiration and information.

Plus, because the shelves are so deep, I’m able to add some cute, decorative elements that make the room feel really cosy, like it’s mine.

My favourite ornament is..

It’s just a block, with a page of A Midsummer Night’s Dream stuck to it, but I feel like it speaks to me. All 5ft 4 of me!

Now, here’s my favourite part of the whole room.

I had the idea to create a cork board map a few weeks after thinking about the premise of BritVoyage. A matter of weeks after we moved in to our home, I’d ordered the ginormous cork board and map. When measuring up, I considered buying a smaller board and trimming the map to fit perfectly, but I thought it would be too much work, and I was likely to make a mistake, so I opted for the larger board.

To secure the map to the board, I decided on using Copydex. Yes, I had to measure the length and width of the board, the length and width of the map, half the differences, calculate where the map would sit, and mark with pins before I could do anything, but it was still a relatively simple job. In my opinion, the perfect addition to any travel blogger’s work space!
