Could this be the cutest hotel you’ll find near Grimsby?
2023 marks a year for firsts: first time in Scunthorpe; first final away game of the season; first major pitch invasion, and first stay in a cute little hotel near Grimsby. Stallingborough Grange was our selection, and what a great one!
Our stay was actually gifted by my mum through a Red Letter Days package she bought us for Christmas, and we’d put off booking somewhere for a year or so while trying to find a good reason to leave the baby behind for a night – as if you need a good reason for a night off parenting. So we decided to hit two birds with one stone and catch a Southend United away game and have dinner, bed, and breakfast in a new part of the country.
First stop was Scunthorpe itself. We parked up in a Sainsbury’s car park after a gruelling 3hr drive and popped into Gill’s Vintage Tea Room for a brilliantly priced afternoon tea. For £10 per person, we were able to get four finger sandwiches, salad, crisps, a sausage roll, a scone, clotted cream, and jam, a mini chocolate cake, and a slab of Victoria sponge with a tea or coffee. We both chose a coffee.
After stuffing ourselves silly, we were a bit concerned that we wouldn’t be able to manage dinner at the hotel. Spoiler: we did manage it but only after regaining our appetite from standing at the football for 3hrs!
Stallingborough Grange
Although we’d spent the day in Scunthorpe, we picked a hotel near Grimsby on the off chance we wanted to go to Cleethorpes for the evening. Location-wise, Stallingborough Grange is kind of in the middle of nowhere. But that adds to its charm, I suppose. It’s a wedding venue, so a location in the middle of fields on the end of the Lincolnshire Wolds is great for photo opportunities.
When we arrived, I liked how rustic it looked, with its thatched roof and formal exterior, without it actually looking like a standard country pub. We entered, checked in, and were given a key to room 7 on the ground floor.
It’s certainly a beautiful room – well decorated, with tea, coffee, and some biscuits. There was a TV mounted on the wall which said it had the ability to cast from your phone but we didn’t try it. The view looked out onto some electric car charging ports, which thankfully for us weren’t in use, but I can imagine it might be a bit awkward if someone coming to check on their car stumbled across you starkers in your room! A nice win point was the extra pillows in cupboard, which you don’t always get.
With our bonus pillows, we crashed for an hour until dinner.
Dinner at Stallingborough Grange
Dinner at Stallingborough Grange is located in their dining room, but first, we were invited to sit in their bar area for a drink. We charged the drinks to our room, and enjoyed the comfy armchairs and Saturday night TV.
It was there that a member of staff brought us the menus: a standard menu, or the one that was prepaid by our package. The couples menu worked out at £55 per couple for a three course meal, including a glass of wine each. I wasn’t drinking, so they offered a half pint of beer and any soft drink as an alternative.
We agreed on the same main (which obviously I forgot to take a photo of) of lamb, which was served on a bed of creamy mash, with mint sauce gravy, and veggies. We differed on our starters and desserts. I opted for a duck arancini style starter, with hoisin sauce and slightly pickled gherkins which was delicious. Dan picked a prawn and smoked salmon salad.
For dessert, I was struggling and just wanted the meringue of the Eton mess, while Dan opted for a chocolate tart, which he said was the stickiest tart he’d ever eaten. Neither of us could finish it; a sign of a great meal!
In the morning, we went for breakfast and debated what to do, whether to go home or hang out in Lincoln for a few hours. Ultimately, the pouring rain made our decision for us, and we would make our way home to Essex, but not before a tasty cooked breakfast, with a selection of Tiptree jam, just to make us feel at home.
If you’re looking for a hotel near Grimsby for a night or two, I’d definitely recommend Stallingborough Grange.
