Why you should visit Lincolnshire, by a local!

Guest Post| Explaining to non residents of Lincolnshire about where in the UK Lincoln is situated is difficult. Very rarely do I meet anyone who instantly knows where Lincoln is. Usually I am offended, then proceed to say “Have you heard of Peterborough? Well it’s about an hour and a half’s drive from there,” or “About an hours drive from Nottingham”. How can people not know where Lincolnshire is? Being the biggest county in the UK after Yorkshire, it is covered with luscious green fields as far as the eye can see, and with only one major city and only a hand full of  major towns, it is embedded mostly with small villages and hamlets. You won’t see a lot of concrete jungle here, no sir.

What I love most about Lincolnshire is our county’s pride and joy, Lincoln Cathedral. Not only was The Da Vinci Code filmed here, but it is one of the most beautiful cathedrals I’ve ever seen, and I’ve visited a fair few all around the world. If you’re really lucky, you’ll see the bishop hanging out there, we’ve met him twice. The cathedral is so grand, and if you’re into having a quiet hour in your day, you couldn’t do it in a more beautiful setting than in Lincoln Cathedral.

Lincoln Castle is also a firm favourite of mine. Here, the Magna Carta is housed and is on display for visitors to marvel at. You can take a tour of the dungeons and walk along the castle walls. For those history buffs amongst us, this will certainly get your brain ticking!

Aside from the above, Lincolnshire is also full of beautiful coastal walks, beaches and trails. If you happen to be visiting between November and early January, take a visit to Donna Nook beach where you will see all the wild grey seals having their babies on the beach. If you arrive at sunrise, you will most certainly be in for an experience! This is when the seals are most lively, you may even experience a birth!
